Are You Considering Abortion?
An abortion decision is a major medical pregnancy choice that will impact your future. It’s important to not be pressured into this decision or regret not knowing the risks.
Here is more information about the types of abortion procedures, the risks, and information to safeguard your health. Your health is a top priority.
Different Types of Abortion Procedures
Medical Abortion
Medical abortion, also called the abortion pill, is a pregnancy termination method involving two different drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. This abortion method is only recommended for women through 10 weeks of pregnancy.
First, mifepristone is used to block the progesterone pregnancy hormone and prevent the pregnancy from growing. Next, misoprostol is taken and causes the uterus to expel the content of the pregnancy. Follow-up is needed with a medical professional after this procedure to be sure all contents of the pregnancy were removed.
Risks of Medical Abortion
The Mayo Clinic shares possible risks of medical abortion, including:
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive system discomfort
- Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion is a more invasive abortion than a medical abortion. Typically, anesthesia is given during this procedure, and different medical instruments are used to dilate and open up the cervix. Next, surgical instruments are used to remove all parts of the pregnancy from the uterus. There is a much longer recovery process for this type of abortion.
Risks of Surgical Abortion
According to the Mayo Clinic, surgical abortion risks include:
- Damage to the cervix
- Scar tissue on the uterine wall
- Infection
- Heavy/prolonged bleeding
- Perforation of the uterus
