An Ultrasound
An ultrasound is needed before an abortion because it first confirms the viability (whether there is a heartbeat and is progressing) of your pregnancy.
Studies reveal that up to 20% of known pregnancies end in natural miscarriage. An ultrasound can alert you to any possible complications, including a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, which would disqualify you from abortion but require other immediate medical attention.
An ultrasound also confirms how far along you are, which will let you know what type of abortion procedure you may qualify for. The FDA only recommends medical abortion (the abortion pill method) for women through 10 weeks of pregnancy. Otherwise, surgical abortion would be your other option.
Finally, an ultrasound confirms the location of your pregnancy and if it’s located in your uterus, an essential detail of a healthy pregnancy.
